Did you know what Childhood cancer is?
A cancer diagnosis changes the life of a child every day. But as the way of treatments improve; many more children could be called themselves a survivor.
The American cancer society is hoping to diagnose more than Ten thousand children from the age of 0-14 with the different form of cancer in 2018, excluding brain tumors. According to ACS, 1180 children died due to brain tumors.
From the past few decades numbers of children increased those were diagnosed with cancer, so has the number of cancer survivors also increased.
In 1975 13 out of 100,000 children were diagnosed with cancer, and 5.1 out of 100,000 died. In 2015 the rate becomes 19 out of every 100,000 and the death rate decreases to 2.3 out of 100,000.
A report at American cancer society that said the reductions in the death rate were the result of years of hard work and research of the doctors and researchers. The child cancer treatment is one of the success stories, with 5 percent of survival rate raise up to 80% rate in the developed countries, but the conditions are worse in poorer countries.
Childhood most common cancer:
Leukemia is one of the most common childhood cancers, it accounts for roughly 30% of all the cancers in children. Researches have helped to develop better treatments and allowing more options for better results.
We really dont know much at all what causes these cancers. While there has been a success with common types of cancer such as leukemia, doctors and researchers are trying to understand rare and complex types of cancer.
There has not been much as progress in understanding rare cancers in children because they are harder to study, as they are rare so it is harder to make progress in cancer that has not affected as many kids.
The parent whom children were fighting against cancer to seek out for the cancer treatment center that provides complete care.
Treating childhood cancer:
The Cancer in children is treated in an entirely different way than that of cancer in adults. Pediatric oncology is a medical center which focuses on the care of children with cancer. Its important to know that this expertise exists and there are many effective treatments are available to cure childhood cancer.
Type of treatments:
With the advancement in medical technology, the researcher has found many treatments for cancer. The type of treatment a child would receive depends on the type of cancer and which stage it is. Some of the common treatments include chemotherapy, stem cell transplant, surgery etc.
Effect of treatment:
Children face different issue during the cancer treatment, after completion of the treatment and as a survivor, for example, they undergo intense cancer treatment, treatment affects differently on their growing bodies than that of adult bodies, they may have different symptoms of drugs applied on them.
Some of the side effects are more harmful to the children than that of adults because they are still in growing process so cancer and its treatment more likely to affect their growing organs. Side effects of treatment may happen to them right away or weeks or years after treatment. Problems that appear weeks or years after the treatment are known as late effects.
The drugs that were used to control symptoms of cancer treatment in adults cannot be used for children because it might be harmful to the children, so the supportive care given to the children is also different.
Survivors of cancer:
It is essential to have a care plan and treatment summary for the survivors of cancer. As cancer survivor face many health problems weeks or years after the treatment known as late effects, these late effects may disturb the survivor physically or emotionally. The late effect varies with the type of cancer and other factors such as which body part was infected and how the organs and tissues were damage there etc. There were follow-up care clinics for survivors, at these clinics survivors are examined by the specialist. These clinics will usually found within the hospitals, but if there were no such clinics in the hospital ask the doctors to recommend one.
